Barwell v Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 29 Jul 2006 at 2:00pm
Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Won 24 points

Match report Division 1 leaders Ashby Hastings travelled to 2nd placed Barwell last weekend in their John German sponsored match. Winning the toss Hastings skipper Johnny Sparks had no hesitation in putting Barwell in to bat on what looked like a good wicket. Ashby got off to a great possible start as Sparks cleaned bowled Grewcock in the 2nd over. Ryan picked up another Barwell scalp in the 4th over and Ashby had Barwell on the back foot as excellent fielding kept the runs to a minimum. When Sparks took the 3rd wicket the score was 67 for 3 and at this point Barwell had their best partnership of the game as Page and Hines put on a 70 partnership for the 4th wicket. The turning point of the innings came as the Page and Hines fell to consecutive balls off the bowling of Hoult, both to excellent catches, one a swirling one taken by Salt one handed in the deep the other a well chased caught and bowled. Barwell new they had to reply on their lower order to give them a target to bowl at as Dewan came out all guns blazing and smashed a quick fire 24 before he was fantastically caught by Sparks off the bowling of Bush, this wicket started the rush off wickets as Barwell tried to post a decent total Ryan mopping up the tail with 3 quick wickets to end the Barwell innings off the final ball with a run out on 202. Hastings taking 7 great catches in the innings.

Ashby, forced into a new opening partnership due to holidays set off well as Andy Burns despatched the ball to the boundary with great regularity, ably supported by the more cautious Hoult. With the score on 46 after only 7 overs Hoult was out caught for 13 to bring to the wicket Ben Evans for his 1st outing of the season. He and Burns took the game to Barwell as 4’s and 6’s were hit all around the ground. Barwell’s bowling changes had no effect to the run rate as Hastings 100 came up in the 20th over. The loos of Burns(64) ct & bowled to Hines in the 21st over brought Hunt to the wicket who continued the attack in the same vein as the earlier batsmen hitting one ball into Earl Shilton! Evans was now in full swing also despatching the ball into the surrounding gardens at frequent intervals and reaching his 50 in doing so. At this point the run rate really increased with 90 runs coming off the next 10 overs to leave Ashby needing just 7 runs off the remaining 15 overs. Evans finished the game in the 32 over with a mighty straight 6 into the gardens finishing on 71 not out supported by Hunt on 43 not out. Next week Hastings entertain Sileby at the Bath Grounds.
