Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 2nd XI v Dunton Bassett on Sat 12 May 2012 at 1.30pm
Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Won AHCC 24pts Dunton Bassett 4pts
Match report
Ashby Hastings 2nd XI finally got their league season underway at home against Dunton Bassett. The boys arrived with fire in their bellies, and a sense of excitement in the atmosphere, as they look towards achieving promotion this season up into Division 4.
Captain Nigel Ellis made the seasons intentions clear before the toss and his more than motivational teamtalk fired up the whole of the team, (even pooley was bouncing off the walls). Despite the motivational teamtalk, Ellis decided he would toss the coin half a revolution too many and Dunton Bassett asked Ashby to bat first, an obvious decision with the outfield resembling a swamp.
Ashby started nicely with Graeme Edwards and Chris Dooley opening the batting and nudging the ball around for an opening stand of 73. Dooley however became frustrated, he played some lovely shots but the wet outfield prevented them from getting the rewards they deserved. He eventually was bowled playing what can only be described as an agricultural shot, for 20. This sparked an Ashby collapse, with nobody from 3 to 11 scoring double figures. A huge congratulations must go to Graeme Edwards for his 61 on debut to help Ashby towards their total of 136.
Although 136 was seen as below par for Ashby, the team had faith in their bowling and fielding, and believed that defending the total could definately be achieved. Mirner and Stephen Dooley opened the bowling with a tight and challenging spell which saw Dooley find the break through bowling Pickering (complete with Chanderpaul esque make up) for just 2. The opposition then showed stubbon resistance and umpiring, up until Gary Edwards came into the attack and took a wicket with his first ever ball for Ashby. He and Jake Poole bowled well together restricting runs and putting Bassett behind the Run rate.
Mirner was then re-introduced into the attack and bowled superbly, returning with a six wicket haul and only conceeding just over 1 per over. He ripped through the middle order and before Ashby knew it Bassett were 9 down. Ellis set an extremely aggresive field in search of the win and this paid off with Perkins (the author of this piece) taking what can only be described as an absolute stunner of a catch at short leg, his reactions were incredible and this sparked celebrations throughout the Ashby team. A full 24 points to start the season, hopefully a similar result can be achieved away at Narborough next week.
