Grace Dieu Park 2nd XI v Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 23 Apr 2011 at 1.30pm
Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Lost AHCC 3 points
Match report
On the first day of the season, the Hastings skipper lost the toss and a young third team were asked to field first in sweltering heat. A good opening bowling partnership between Gough and Cooper saw the opening batsmen struggle to score any runs off the bat, with some unplayable deliveries going unrewarded. Gough finally deservedly got the breakthrough in the final over of his opening spell. Smithson and McNeil continued the good work of the opening bowlers and along with some good catches and fautless fielding, Grace Dieu soon found themselves reduced to 80-4. Despite the best efforts in the field the batsmen began to let loose and soon found themselves approaching 150, before a superb hat trick from Cooper saw Hastings claw back some momentum. However, Grace Dieu’s lower order dug deep until a late Cooper wicket gave Hastings 3 bowling points and closed on 192-8.
Hastings got off to a flier with the bat with Marriott crashing his way to 16, however this was short lived as he was dismissed the ball after, and with the dismissals of McNeil and R. Legg, the momentum was now firmly with Grace Dieu at 24-3. Smithson soon followed and left Hall and Hulley to try and rescue the Hastings innings. A decent partnership was finally broken as Hulley was bowled. Some good resistance from the lower order kept Grace Dieu frustrated and with thunderstorms threatening (which would have resulted in a winning draw for Ashby) were getting very anxious. The last wicket finally fell in the 31st over to leave Ashby disappointed on 77 all out.
All in all a very committed showing in the field by all and a great improvement on last year. If this continues it surely won’t be long before its rewarded with a deserved win.
Next week sees the first home game of the season at Western Park against Loughborough Outwoods.
