Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Won 23 Points
Match report
After a positive start to the season against Grace Dieu, the third XI played their first game of the season at Western Park. Although the game may have been in doubt had a late decision to put covers on the wicket on Friday evening not been taken. The Ashby skipper won a vital toss and stuck the visitors in on a very wet and green wicket.
Once again Cooper and Gough kept things tight with the new ball with Gough getting the breakthrough. Cooper again bowled well but was unrewarded in his first spell. Wilson replaced him in the attack and struggled to get any consistency from his first 2 overs. A decision by Smithson for Wilson to swap ends meant that he had to bowl an over and was subsequently hit for the first boundary of the game! The decision was vindicated by Wilson taking two wickets in his first over form the opposite end. Despite the hard work of Ellwood who bowled well for his 2 wickets and Wilson with 3 wickets, things started to get away from Ashby as Shepshed began to race on.
Cooper and Wilson came close to bowling them out with both coming back to take a wicket, however Wilson just fell short of 5 wickets and Shepshed finished on 172-9. Despite the disappointment of it at one stage looking like Shepshed wouldn’t make 100, Ashby were confident that their strong batting line up would do the job.
As with last week things started positively with the bat for Ashby as Harris and Craig Smithson went about putting together their second consecutive 50 opening stand. However, Shepshed got the breakthrough shortly after as Craig Smithson lost patience and got stumped. Anslow and Callum Smithson both fell for single figures as the ship started to wobble. However Harris kept a steady head fuelled by his sole banana at tea to pass 3 figures supported by Marriott and Camp. Harris finished the game off with a 6 and claimed Ashbys first win of the season.
Another very strong performance from all aspects and they go into week 5 away at Thorpe Arnold still unbeaten and in third place. Next week will be the biggest test so far this season and Ashby will need to be on their game to remain unbeaten going into week 6.
