Thorpe Arnold 3rd XI v Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn Winning Draw 13 - 11

Match report Ashby 3s travelled to Thorpe Arnold with five changes from the first two games of the season. Ben Blance, Simon Colver, Andy Hulley, Harry James and Jake Warriner, replacing Neil Harris, Josh Wilson, Joe Gough, Alex Cooper and Tom Marriott. Marriott being the victim of an unfortunate sight screen incident earlier in the morning!
Despite the amount of changes, there was still an air of confidence in the dressing room as Smithson lost the toss and was put into bat with the weather being perfect for batting!
The Smithson’s opened the batting but both fell early despite both playing some nice shots. Anslow and Hulley looked comfortable and started to build a decent partnership before Hulley was caught and Hastings were soon 3 down. A brilliant partnership followed as Anslow and Camp put on a brilliant partnership which really frustrated the opposition. Anslow looked well set before the ball took a mysterious bounce and saw to his demise. Camp was ably supported by the rest of the batting line up as he made his way to his first 50 in 2012 and they soon passed 166. A last wicket partnership between Blance and Ellwood ensured that only 2 overs would be given to the opposition which would become crucial come the end of the game. Hastings closed on a very competitive 183.
With both Cooper and Gough out of the side a new opening partnership was required and Ellwood and Colver performed exceptionally with Ellwood taking off stump out of the ground to get the breakthrough. Colver was unlucky not to take an early wicket and his tight bowling ensured he remained in the attack. Rafe Legg took some very good takes to reduce the amount of freebies to the opposition. In an early gamble Smithson introduced Harry James after 14 overs and he bowled with a lot of control giving very little away. Thorpe Arnolds batsmen continued to frustrate as Hastings bowlers struggled to get the breakthrough but hardly any runs were being scored. Blance was introduced after 29 overs and he duely delivered the breakthrough, as the captain swung so hard that he fell over and got bowled. After drinks the batsmen began to open up as they required 100 runs at over 6 an over to win. They continued in this manner so Ellwood was reintroduced and again bowled well. The game looked to be getting away from Hastings with Thorpe Arnold only 3 down and racing along. An injury to Ellwood, who would have bowled the 45th and 47th over, looked to make things worse for Ashby in the 44th over. He did however epitomise the lengths at which everyone would go to for their teammates as he chased down a ball to the boundary by hopping as quick as he could in the next over! With two overs left and only 9 to win Hastings never gave up, and when Warriner took an incredible catch on the boundary off Colvers bowling the belief began to grow. In an unbelieveable turn of events the opener then played the very next ball straight down Warriners throat, meaning two new batsmen were at the crease still needing 9 to win and momentum was in Ashbys favour. Harry James stepped up to bowl the very last over and took a wicket early on, events meant that Thorpe Arnold now needed 4 off the last ball to win so everyone apart from the keeper and the bowler was on the boundary. The batsman tried his best but couldn’t clear Hulley at long on as he took a catch with the last ball of the game.
A great show of spirit and determination from this Hastings side as they managed to come back from the brink of defeat to seal a fantastic winning draw. A thrilling game which now means Hastings are still unbeaten with 1 win and 2 winning draws. Next week sees the visit of Countesthorpe to Western Park with the 3s on a role!
