Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 3rd XI v Countesthorpe 3rd XI on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 1.30pm
Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Won 24 Points
Match report
Knowing a win would send them into the top two, Smithson won the toss and had no hesitation in putting the visitors into bat on a damp track.
Despite the return of Gough and Cooper to the side, Poole and Ellwood opened the bowling and it proved tough as the openers began to press on at over 4 an over. The first bowling change saw the breakthrough as Cooper dismissed the Countesthorpe captain and followed this up by bowling a bouncer at the other opener which appeared to shake him up after being hit on the helmet. Gough backed Cooper up well with a 7 over spell of 3-9 and Countesthorpe were soon on the back foot. Blance managed to get a wicket with the first ball of his spell and the reintroduction of Ellwood, who is becoming more and more reliable, saw the wickets tumble as he took 4 and had a good chance to take 5, with him bowling 4 deliveries at the number 11 batsman. Poole wrapped things up in the very next over and Countesthorpe were all out for what seemed a low score of 107.
With 55 overs to score 108, confidence was high that this would be achieved. However a poor start soon saw Hastings fall to 20-4, Anslow and James began to rebuild the innings as they hung around despite scoring opportunities being limited. Hastings middle to lower order hung around to get to 51-7 off 27 overs, with Poole and Blance now at the crease. A brilliant 50 partnership from the two, took Hastings to the brink of what seemed a very unlikely victory at 20-4. With the scores level, the bowler bowled a no-ball, to give Hastings the full 24 points for the first time in 2012.
A brilliant show of determination allowed Hastings to once again turn a very poor position into a positive result. Everyone gave their all and now get the chance to go to the top of the table with a victory away at Loughborough Outwoods next week, where everyone will have to be at their best.
