Dunton Bassett 2nd XI v Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 21 Jul 2012 at 1.30pm
Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Lost
Match report
After the washout of the previous two weeks the 3rd XI finally got a game on a rare sunny day during this season so far. Smithson lost the toss yet again away from home and unsurprisingly he was asked to bat first.
The game didn’t start too well as Smithson was dismissed early on for just four after being stumped off a wide delivery to the opening bowler. Davies, Anslow and Prentice soon followed as the top order yet again failed to impress for the 3s. Legg who has been batting well this season, was promoted to 4 and managed for a short time to offer his usual resistance with the bat and Marriott also went well in his 18 without hitting a boundary! After James and Smith failed to trouble the scorers Hastings were in deep trouble 8 down for less than 50. Callum Smithson and Jake Poole offered good resistance during which Poole middle a ball straight at the close in-fielders head! After Pooles dismissal, Cooper also offered some resistance before Smithson was the last wicket to fall, leaving Hastings on 64 all out.
Due to getting bowled out so early Dunton Bassett would have to come out to bat straight away, with early wickets the only way Hastings would challenge. That’s just what they got as Dunton found themselves very quickly down to 3-4, with 3 wickets for Cooper who was too quick for all 3 dismissals (The bowler who is very slow according to their umpire!), and one for Poole. Surely not another get out of jail card for Hastings 3s batsmen this season? Unfortunately it wasn’t the case as the next partnership took them within touching distance of winning the game, before Poole returned to take the final wicket of the game and the runs were knocked off.
A disappointing first defeat for Hastings as their luck seemed to have run out from previous weeks. A defeat that may have been on the cards for a while now and a real wake-up call to push on for the remainder of the season. To have lost just one game at this stage of the season and to lie in second place after finishing second bottom last season is a fantastic achievement, we must now ensure we enjoy the rest of the season and if we get the added bonus of promotion (which no one would of expected us to be anywhere near at the start of the season) it will be a credit to all involved.
