Newbold Verdon 2nd XI v Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 1pm
Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Won By 10 wickets
Match report
Ashby Hastings still unbeaten
Newbold Verdon 104 all out
Ashby Hastings 108-0
Ashby Hastings carried on their unbeaten start to the season with a comprehensive ten wicket victory over Newbold Verdon.
The Ashby side won the toss and decided to field first. Unlike previous weeks, Ashby found themselves struggling to find an early wicket and the Newbold openers were scoring at a good rate. This coupled with an injury to Ashby wicket keeper, Callum Smithson, gave the impression that it could be one of those days.
This was until a crazy piece of batting from the openers resulted in a run out for Joe Brooks. This opened the door for Ashby. Richard Lewis found the edge of the other Newbold opening batsman and this was caught by replacement wicket keeper, Sam Perkins.
Mike Davies was introduced into the Ashby attack and he started to put Ashby on top. In his ten over spell he bowled 5 maidens, really putting the pressure on the hosts. A superb field change lead to a wicket for Davies when Mark Wilkinson was caught at mid-wicket after the man had just been moved from gully.
The pressure that was built by Davies was capitalised upon by the other Ashby bowlers. New Zealander Chris Beck bowled nicely, taking 3 wickets for just ten runs off 9 overs. Sam Perkins returned the keeping gloves to Smithson before taking 3 wickets for 7 runs, and opening bowler Lewis returned to the attack and helped clean up the tail, finishing with two wickets for 21 off 12 overs. Ashby bowled and fielded superbly and bowled Newbold out for just 104.
Ashby set about chasing the low total with ease and Chris Beck played some lovely strokes along the way. Tom Yates continued his immense form in support of Beck and the result never looked in doubt. Beck finished on 64 not out and opening partner Yates finished on 40 not out, giving Ashby a ten wicket victory.
Ashby host Loughborough Outwoods on Saturday and hope to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2017 season.
