Ashby Hastings Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets

Match report Unbeaten Ashby go top!
Loughborough Greenfields 146 all out
Ashby Hastings 147-8
Ashby win by 2 wickets

This weekend saw top of the table Loughborough Greenfields, host unbeaten Ashby Hastings in a crucial clash at the top of the table.

The hosts won the toss and decided that they would bat first. The Loughborough batsmen started well. Openers Singh and Sandhu looked comfortable and were scoring nicely, however Singh played one big shot too many and was caught by Joe Brooks off the bowling of Mike Davies.
With the hosts on 40-1, disaster struck for Ashby. The batsman edged the ball through to the slips where it struck Ashby captain, Tom Yates in the eye. Subsequently Yates had to leave the field to visit the hospital, leaving Ashby without their captain, their opening batsman and the correct number of fielders.
This inspired the visitors and they began to take wickets at regular intervals and also managed to slow the scoring rate. Opening bowlers Lewis and Davies took 4 wickets between them, including the wicket of the dangerous Gurwinder Singh for 18, thanks to a good catch from Simon Moore off the bowling of Lewis.
After the drinks break Ashby introduced their spin duo of Sam Perkins and Chris Beck. The pair continued to reduce the run rate and also kept taking wickets. David Burgess offered some resistance for Loughborough, until he was eventually run out for 38 by Lewis. Loughborough eventually were all out for an under par 146, with Beck taking three wickets and Perkins taking two.
Ashby’s response did not start well when opener Spencer Clark and number three, Perkins, both out LBW before the score had reached ten. The ever reliable Chris Beck batted nicely however, and he was supported well by Jake Poole. Poole eventually fell, quickly followed by Simon Moore, with the score still less than 50.
Richard Lewis joined Beck and the two did well to keep the scoreboard ticking over. As the two were batting, captain Yates returned to the ground following his trip to the hospital. With his eye lid glued nicely together he strapped his pads on and had to replace the dismissed Beck.
His injury did not seem to affect him too much as he managed to see Ashby home thanks to some wonderful support from Zac Warriner and a very good innings from Joe Brooks.
The victory took Ashby 13 points clear at the top of the table, and they hope to back this up, next week, at home to Shepshed.
