Match report Ashby Hastings pick up from where they left off
Bardon 138 all out
Ashby Hastings 139-3

After winning the league in 2017, Ashby Hastings couldn’t wait to get their 2018 campaign underway. Unfortunately due to various circumstances they had to wait 4 weeks longer than anticipated. This did not stop them from kicking off with an emphatic victory over local rivals Bardon.

Ashby won the toss and elected to field. The Ashby opening bowlers got stuck straight into the hosts batsmen with pace, aggression and accuracy. Richard Lewis took the first wicket of the season thanks to a catch from his opening bowling partner Dylan Buckthorpe. This was swiftly followed by his second wicket, when he bounced out Warwick Miller for an unconvincing 14. It was then the turn of the new overseas paceman Buckthorpe to chip in with a couple of wickets of his own reducing Bardon to 46-4.

Ashby looked as though nothing had changed from their season which saw them claim the award for North West Leicestershire team of the year. They followed an almost identical game plan. They looked to reduce runs and take wickets at regular intervals to set up a platform in which to chase a target. James Spencer and Sam Perkins followed this game plan perfectly, both keeping it tight and Perkins chipped in with a wicket of his own.

Bardon began to fall to pieces, quite literally. Skipper, Dom Stevenson had to retire hurt when he pulled a muscle and Hickling also pulled a muscle and was struggling to run. This did not help the home side as they were eventually bowled out for 138. Buckthorpe and Lewis finished with 3 wickets each, Perkins with 2 and Jake Poole opened his account for the season too.

Ashby’s reply started very well with captain, Tom Yates and his partner Spencer Clark putting on 49 before Yates was caught for 14. Spencer Clark was the star of the show with the bat, he scored 69 despite injuring his groin. He was supported well by Perkins and Brooks as Ashby neared the relatively low target. Clark was dismissed with Ashby needing 30 to win, but this just allowed Buckthorpe and Brooks to finish the job quickly and give Ashby the 25 points.

Ashby will play at home for the first time this Saturday as they welcome Narborough and Littlethorpe to the Bath Grounds. The Ashby men will look to open their 2018 season with back to back victories.
