Ashby Hastings go top after another convincing win
Ashby Hastings 152-1
Ashby Hastings beat Lutterworth convincingly by 9 wickets to claim top spot in the league.
Ashby went into the game missing several key players including their skipper Tom Yates. So Jake Poole took over the captains role and it started well when he won the toss and decided to field. Ashby discussed the same game plan as always and looked to restrict the opponents and take wickets at regular intervals.
Richard Lewis and Dylan Buckthorp opened the bowling with their usual pace and accuracy, this lead to early frustrations for the batsmen and early rewards for Lewis as he took two wickets. After 18 overs the hosts were scoring at under two an over and struggled to get any momentum. This wasn’t helped by Mike Davies being introduced into the bowling attack, he bowled with incredible accuracy and skill.
Alongside Ashby’s superb bowling was a fielding display to admire. Louis Kemp took a stunning one handed catch at mid-wicket and got himself a run out. Most of the Ashby fielders were having blinders apart from Joe Brooks who had a tricky day in the field to say the least.
Mike Davies continued to bowl well and he was well backed up by the off spin of Eddy Ikin. Davies finished with 4 wickets and the Lutterworth batsmen continued to struggle. Baxter was the only man to offer any threat, his 62 not out helped Lutterworth to limp to 148 for 7 off their 45 overs.
Ashby’s opening pair was all change from last week, with Yates and Clark both missing it was down to Sam Perkins and Jake Poole to open up. The new pair started strongly though and bought up a 50 partnership in the 12th over. Poole had hit a stunning straight drive for 4, whilst Perkins had muscled the opening bowler back over his head for 6. Poole was cleaned up in the 13th over for 12, but this bought Ashby’s danger man Eddy Ikin to the crease.
He and Perkins looked to chase the relatively low score quickly and both men found the boundary at regular intervals. Perkins took the 20th over for 21 runs and this helped bring up his half century. Ikin had a scare when there was an appeal for caught behind, however it was judged to have came off his forearm and he survived.
Ashby cruised to victory in the 25th over and looked the much better side. Ikin finished on 37 not out and Perkins made a superb 87 not out.
Ashby host fellow high flyers Melton Mowbray next week, a match which could prove crucial in their promotion push.
