Hastings Set the Standards High
For a Successful Season
Ashby Hastings started their season in The Everards Premier Division in 2009 with a bang. Tom Yates’ team registered a convincing 8 wicket victory over Hinckley Town which the skipper described as a “near perfect display”.
It was the first ball of the season that set the ball rolling for Hastings as Left-Armer Matt Ryan combined with Keeper Ollie Hunt to dismiss the first of Hinckley’s batsmen with a simple caught-behind. Ryan and fellow opening bowler Richard Lewis made life tough for the top order by keeping runs to a minimum and claiming wickets at regular intervals. Ryan returning figures of 3-23 while Lewis’ 11 over’s posted the super economical figures of 2-15 through an impeccable line and length.
Yates praised the energy and athleticism shown in the field which was emphasised by two spectacular catches. One at gully by new boy Adam O’Mahoney, the second at point by Hastings new overseas recruit Justin Moore.
All bowlers made full use of the swinging conditions as Jimmy Neal and Jonny Sparks continued the flow of wickets claiming 3-8 off six over’s and 2-18 off 9 over’s respectively. The 34 over’s bowled by Hastings resulting in Hickley being bowled out for a meagre total of just 69. “It was a great display of fast bowling” said Yates, and added “We still have more to give with our spin-bowling options of Ian Giles and Justin Moore not required.”
Hastings run chase began with a small hiccup losing Yates and Sam Carline cheaply to swinging deliveries before Moore (25 not out) and Sparks (28 not out) steadied the innings with a prompt completion of the pursuit. Moore showing glimpses of the pedigree that led to his selection in the New South Wales Under 19 team with three consecutive boundaries from one Hinckley over. Yates was ecstatic at claiming the full 24 points whilst denying the opposition a single point.
Hastings continue their 2009 campaign at The Bath Grounds on Saturday against Stoughton and Thurnby and will also participate in the Preliminary round of the Premier Twenty20 Competition on Monday where they will take on Syston Town and Loughborough Town for a place in the finals day at Leicestershire’s Grace Road Ground later in the season.
