Ashby Hastings Cricket Club 1st XI v Stoughton & Thurnby on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1:00pm
Match was Drawn 17 points

Match report Ashby’s superb start to the season continued with a well-fought winning draw over a resilient Stoughton and Thurnby side. Stoughton won the toss and invited Ashby to bat on a track that would assist the bowlers early on. Despite the visible moisture on the surface, the pitch dried out and 200 seemed a par score.
The early swing and movement provided the bowlers with both problems to control and wicket taking deliveries, as Wells bowled an erratic opening spell but picked up the key wickets of Moore (7), Yates (8) and Carline (17), despite going for 40 runs in his 6 overs.
Sparks was then joined by Hunt, who compiled a steady partnership of 50 runs before the latter was caught out in the deep for 21, attempting to push on the scoring rate. This sparked a mini collapse with Mahoney (3), Sparks (35), Ellis (4) and Lewis (0) all falling within a 10 run period. This left Ashby reeling at 120-8, as Giles was joined at the crease by Neal. With plenty of overs left to bat, it was simply a case of occupying the crease and batting out the overs. Neal batted in the way which he knows best, blasting a quick-fire 20 before holing out to mid-off, leaving Ashby at 148-9 with only Matt Ryan to bat.
Anything from that point on was seen as a bonus for Ashby, but a tremendous display of grit and determination from Giles and Ryan showed that patience was the key to scoring runs on that surface. After sticking at the crease for a few overs, Giles and Ryan were able to capitalise on some tired bowling and compiled a final wicket stand of 60 to bring the Ashby to a decent score of 213-9 off the full compliment of overs. Giles and Ryan both carried their bats for 35 and 30 respectively.
Ashby then carried the momentum into their bowling innings, and realised that tight bowling a good fielding would be the key to winning the match. Ashby got off to a good start, restricting Stoughton to 2.5 runs an over for the first 14 overs, with Ryan and Lewis picking up a wicket apiece. Stoughton’s batsmen then looked to progress steadily, and wickets were hard to come by. After Ryan bowling 12 overs and Lewis bowling 9, they were replaced by Sparks and Neal. Ashby knew this part of the innings was crucial in them gaining anything from the match, and so began ‘the squeeze’. Sparks bowled 14 overs straight through finishing with 2-59 and Neal bowled 11 on the trot, ending with figures of 3-36. They both displayed excellent control and the ability to bowl to a set field, conceding few boundaries and always containing the Stoughton batsmen. ‘The squeeze’ went to plan and left Stoughton at 160-7 with 4 overs left. Yates then decided to go for the kill and brought back Ryan and Lewis for two overs a-piece in an attempt to knock over the final 3 batsmen. Despite a couple of half chances, Stoughton managed to see it through without any further losses, finishing on 167-7. Ryan finished with figures of 1-30 off his allotted overs, and Lewis ending with 1-33 off 11.
The four bowlers bowled exceptionally well and managed to turn the match in Ashby’s favour, ably backed up by excellent fielding throughout the 50 overs. This resulted in Ashby picking up 17 points compared to Stoughton’s 7. Overall its been a superb start to the season for Ashby which will be looked to be improved upon at Loughborough Town next week.
